Biological: Dopaminergic reward system hyperactivity

Psychological: Impulsivity, distorted thinking (e.g., illusion of control)

Social: Exposure, peer behavior, accessibility to gambling

Prevalence

0.4%–1% of adults globally; more common in males

Symptoms & Diagnosis (Mnemonic: GAMBLE)

  • G - Grieving losses (returns to get even)
  • A - Amounts wagered increase
  • M - Mood regulation via gambling
  • B - Borrowing or depending on others
  • L - Lies about gambling
  • E - Efforts to stop fail

Treatment

  • CBT with motivational enhancement
  • Group therapy (Gamblers Anonymous)
  • Naltrexone for craving reduction
