Intentional falsification of symptoms or induction of illness without obvious external rewards.

Etiology (Biopsychosocial Model)

Biological: History of chronic illness may prime behavior.

Psychological: Identity linked with “sick role,” unresolved trauma.

Social: Health system access, desire for care/attention.

Symptoms & Diagnosis (Mnemonic: FAKE)

F - Falsified or induced symptoms

A - Absence of external gain (e.g., money)

K - Knowingly presents as ill

E - Excludes other psychiatric disorders
