Schizoaffective Disorder

A condition marked by concurrent psychotic symptoms and mood episodes, with delusions/hallucinations present ≥2 weeks without mood symptoms.

Symptoms & Diagnosis (Mnemonic: SAD MAP)

  • S - Schizophrenic symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, etc.)
  • A - Affective episode (manic/depressive) required
  • D - Duration: Mood symptoms present for most of illness
  • M - Mood symptoms with psychosis for majority
  • A - Absence of mood symptoms for ≥2 weeks with psychosis
  • P - Psychosis not substance-induced

Treatment

  • Combination therapy: mood stabilizers + antipsychotics
  • Psychotherapy, social skills training
  • Family-focused therapy and relapse prevention
