Schizophreniform Disorder
Similar to schizophrenia but duration is 1–6 months, and impaired functioning is not required.
Etiology (Biopsychosocial Model)
Biological: Shares genetic risks with schizophrenia.
Psychological: Early maladaptive cognitive patterns.
Social: Isolation, stress, poor coping.
Symptoms & Diagnosis (Mnemonic: A-FIRM)
- A - Active-phase symptoms like delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech
- F - Functional decline not mandatory
- I - Illness lasts 1–6 months
- R - Rules out mood or medical conditions
- M - Must have 1 of 3 core symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech)
Treatment
Antipsychotic medication: (e.g., risperidone, aripiprazole)
Psychosocial therapy: Early intervention
Monitor: For progression to schizophrenia
