Adjustment Disorders

Emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to a stressor, occurring within 3 months of its onset.

Etiology (Biopsychosocial Model)

Biological: Stress vulnerability, neurochemical sensitivity

Psychological: Maladaptive coping styles

Social: Life changes (divorce, job loss, transitions)

Symptoms & Diagnosis (Mnemonic: SAD FIT)

  • S - Stressor occurred within past 3 months
  • A - Anxiety, depression, or behavioral symptoms
  • D - Disproportionate distress to the stressor
  • F - Functional impairment
  • I - Impairment not explained by another disorder
  • T - Temporarily resolves within 6 months after stressor ends

Treatment

  • Supportive psychotherapy and problem-solving skills
  • Brief CBT or interpersonal therapy
  • Sometimes short-term anxiolytics
