Adjustment Disorders
Emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to a stressor, occurring within 3 months of its onset.
Etiology (Biopsychosocial Model)
Biological: Stress vulnerability, neurochemical sensitivity
Psychological: Maladaptive coping styles
Social: Life changes (divorce, job loss, transitions)
Symptoms & Diagnosis (Mnemonic: SAD FIT)
- S - Stressor occurred within past 3 months
- A - Anxiety, depression, or behavioral symptoms
- D - Disproportionate distress to the stressor
- F - Functional impairment
- I - Impairment not explained by another disorder
- T - Temporarily resolves within 6 months after stressor ends
Treatment
- Supportive psychotherapy and problem-solving skills
- Brief CBT or interpersonal therapy
- Sometimes short-term anxiolytics
